Pushing yourself too hard will only hurt your performance and, more importantly, can have long-term adverse effects on your health. To monitor your performance, at the end of each exercise, you can see your kills-per-minute in the top left corner of the map. The goal is to do a little better in every second round of each exercise. Lastly, since every activity targets different skills, it is normal to perform a little worse in the first round of every exercise.
