It’s interesting to note that while all the FM chips sampled in SAC and SAC PC are either manufactured by Yamaha (or in one case derived from a Yamaha design) there is still significant variation with each FM chip sampled having its own sound.
It’s quite a lot of variety.īetween SAC and SAC PC, you’ll have the majority of FM timbres used in 80s and 90s gaming at your fingertips. In Super Audio Cart (SAC), the emphasis is on digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs): out of the eight systems sampled, six support DCOs, two support FM and two support sample playback and wavetable synthesis (in the 90s consumer sense, not in the sense of a Waldorf PPG). However, the emphasis in the sampled sounds is quite different. It really is a case of the “whole is more than the sum of its parts” because given the number of methods that Super Audio Cart PC has Captured (especially when paired with Super Audio Cart) you can dial exactly what type of coloration or types of artifacts you want as your starting point, whether you’re looking for FM, DCO virtual analog or sample-playback based sounds in a way that you just don’t get from loading up a hyper realistic sample library or the newest soft synth of choice. In Super Audio Cart PC you’ll find computers from the 1980s (one of which has a sound chip design from 1978) all the way through to 1995. Both libraries share the same GUI and all their Commodore 64 sounds, but everything else is completely unique to each library. Super Audio Cart PC compliments that by focusing only computers. It’s a sister product to Super Audio Cart (which we reviewed in 2017), which focused almost entirely on dedicated video game systems, as well as the Commodore 64 computer. Super Audio Cart PC (from for $99 USD for new users or $79 USD for owners of Super Audio Cart) is a Kontakt Player library (for full Kontakt or the free Kontakt Player versions 5.5.2 or higher) that samples a variety of retro computer instruments (including two different chips that were also used in various arcade machines). With a library of computer audio sounds from Commodore 64 to 1995’s WinGROOVE, SAC PC does for computers what SAC did for video game systems.
